Everyday I play word games with Chat GPT to do reading and writing practice. When I first started, I always made mistakes. Now my errors are only on words I’ve never heard before and it’s a great way to quickly learn vocabulary 🤣.Memory works best when something is fun and exciting.
I’ve been learning to read and write Thai for about 2.5 months now. I think it’s starting to get easier now. I often get asked the question why did I pick Thai as a second language - I’m trying to build up my answer to include some more Informaton - สรุปก็คือผมอยากเรียนภาษาไทยนิดหน่อยเพื่อจะไปเที่ยวเมืองไทย แต่ผมก็ตกหลุมรักภาษาไทยครับI’ll practice reading from this script -Please correct me if anything is not understandable.
I’ve been doing A LOT reading and writing study and in addition A LOT of real time speaking and listening practice. I’m proud to be able to have 10-15 minute conversations now where I’m thinking, listening and speaking in Thai and using English to only clarify things here and there. It feels like a switch has just been flipped and I’m able to communicate.I still make mistakes but the main thing is I’m still progressing and I’m still understood by the listener 🙏 Feeling proud of the progress.
My focus is learning to read and getting far away from phonetics as possible :). Today I did some reviewing of lesson notes and homework my teacher had sent me, as I build on more and more knowledge on live and dead endings - in relation to tone rules. I also studied two intermediate level connecting words: 1) แม้ว่า - although 2) ไม่อย่างนั้น - otherwise I’ll try use these in a sentence in my audio note attached to this post - แม้ว่าจะอากาศหนาวมาก ผมต้องพาหมาไปเดินเล่น ไม่อย่างนั้นหมาของผมจะเบื่อครับEnglish translation: “Even though the weather is very cold, I have to take my dog for a walk. Otherwise, my dog will be bored”
Today I’ve been learning some more tone rules such as live and dead syllables. My memory is not the best today after coming off afternoon shift but I’ve got one more day to get the pattern correct before my teacher and I move onto other tone rules.Slowly making the jump from phonetics to reading in Thai, I’m just super slow 🤣 but doing okay for a month and a half of reading / writing progress. One day I’ll look back on this and hopefully be wondering why I thought it was so hard 🤷♂️
It’s going to snow tonight and tomorrow in my village, so I’m just specifically practicing some spelling tonight - Like English, There’s some words in Thai that just need to be memorized.Left is my attempt this morning and the right page is tonight, I got there in the end.I’ll probably forget the spelling by tomorrow 🤣. Photo two is a snow cloud building this afternoon!
A short story of my day and I hope I’m understood?Tonight I will practice some reading and writing plus review some tones on my digital system to make sure I can keep reaching my goal for next year :).Thumbs up if you can understand me 👍Thumbs down if you can’t 👎If it was somewhat okay just give me a 👀55555555555555
Today I found software to help me visually see Thai tones in quick time. At the moment I can only compare with a native female speaker on the software (who naturally has a higher pitch than my deep voice). I’m feeling better about my tones and I know what my weak points are 💪
