The other day, I went to the zoo with my friend. The elephant didn’t move at all. Maybe it was because of the heat.Yesterday’s heat in Tokyo was truly extreme. Japan is suffering from unusually hot weather, but could summers here ever become cooler and more comfortable in the future?Just as the dinosaurs may have perished from the cold, humans might one day perish from the heat.
When British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attended the G7 Summit in Hiroshima two years ago,he left us with these words:“Shakespeare tells us to ‘give sorrow words.’ Yet language fails in the light of the bomb’s flash. No words can describe the horror and suffering of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But what we can say, with all our hearts, and all our souls, is no more.”I also served as a public official for the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, and among all the words spoken, Prime Minister Sunak’s message left the deepest impression on me.Today marks 80 years since the atomic bombing of Japan.
