On the first day of March, Romanians celebrate the coming of spring in their unique way—through the symbolic mărtisor. Mărtisor (a diminutive of Martie, the Romanian word for March) is a small object that women receive on this day as a symbol of respect and admiration. They are usually small items, such as handmade flowers, jewelry, and figurines, tied with a red and white entwined cord. I made and painted these for my family and friends 🌸
