“I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen.”― John SteinbeckOur eyes may capture the images of those around us. Yet how many of us actually take a good look at those in front of us. It's easy to be shallow, judgemental, and even condescending. It is however, incredibly difficult to be nuanced and conscientious. We find it to be almost impossible at times to identify with others or to empathize with their strife. We don't see except what justifies our thoughts and actions, and grants us legitimacy, even if it is at others expense.
Today is Thanksgiving Day in the United States. It's a day of feast, family, and gratitude. Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday of the month of November, and is an official holiday in America. People gather on this day and offer thanks for all that they have, and enjoy their time off with family. This is also a very commercial holiday, people shop for seasonal food items like Turkeys, gravy, , and cranberry sauce before, and then shop for clothes as well as other retail items afterwards because of all the deals available.
What do you do on your days off? Today I'm off, but it's not a weekend, so I'm spending my time at home. I washed my car, read a little from a new book I borrowed from the library, watched an episode of a TV show, and a short documentary on the Magna Carta. Not to mention, I've been on this app. I will probably meet up with friends tonight too. Tell me, what do you do on your days off?
Over here in America almost everyone needs a car. I've had a very old car for sometime now, but today I bought a new one. 😊A 2020 Toyota Camry LE. I got a dark brown color since it's not too flashy, and black absorbs too much heat, and we live in a hot city. We also have a grey car already, and I dislike the color white.
"You are free and that is why you are lost."― Franz KafkaWe are free, which means we can achieve happinesses. However, we are constantly anxious about the consequences of our actions. We feel the need to play a balancing act, one of ambition vs continuity. Do we accept our lot? Or venture out for more, and endanger that which is between our hands? We have the choice. Which is either a great comfort or highly disturbing, depending on your take on the matter. Life is an odyssey in that way. " أنت حر لذا أنت ضائع."- فرانز كافكا
"Although our intellect always longs for clarity and certainty, our nature often finds uncertainty fascinating."- Carl Von Clausewitz, Prussian general and military theorist."على الرغم من أن عقولنا تشتاق دائمًا إلى الوضوح واليقين ، إلا أن طبيعتنا غالبًا ما تجد حالة من عدم اليقين مثيرة."- كار فون كلاوسوتز ، الجنرال البروسي و المنظرين العسكريين. We definitely enjoy ambiguity at times. It gives us cause to look for answers, which is a manifestation of our desire to satisfy our curiosity .
I just started reading a book about personal finance. It's by Standard and Poor's the world's leading financial services company. It publishes financial research, and analysis on stocks, bonds, and commodities. The book is a practical guide to everything related to personal finance in the United States. Ranging from how to deal with banks and manage your savings, to retirement and money transfers or credit lines. Are you interested in learning about how to improve your personal finance skills? If so, what sources do you use?
On a digital watch we see the time right now. A useful thing no doubt, however on the older watches (analogs) we could see the time now, what is was before, and what is to come. A much more broader perspective. Such a look at the passing of time offers us more clarity. This is similar to how we view history. History informs us of the past, explains the present, and past events provide the groundwork for the future.Yet, so many times we get caught up in current events, we forget context and adopt the narrow view. - I paraphrased David McCullough's words from "The American Spirit, Who We Are and What We Stand For".
Economics at its root is the study of incentives: how people get what they want, or need when other people want or need the same thing. There are 3 types of incentives: economic, moral, and social.- From Freakenomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner.
"I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination."- Jimmy DeanWe can't control others actions. We have inputs on our environment, but we don't forge it. What we can do, is respond proportionally to what happens to us. We need to be flexible and adaptable, that is the key to success. Being rigid and unresponsive is a sure way to fail. Be proactive, not reactive. Draw your road map, but don't hesitate to take alternative routes because that is often neccessary."لا يمكنني تغيير اتجاه الريح ، لكن يمكنني تعديل أشرعي للوصول دائمًا إلى وجهتي."- جيمي دين
“Reading is to the mind, as exercise is to the body.” – Brian TracyReading exercises our minds in thought, and grows our bodies of knowledge. It also attacks the pockets of ignorance in our understanding, and fills the many gaps of information all of us have. Just like we need a healthy diet and exercise to be in good shape, we need education to have a healthy and productive mental faculty.Useful books are a great way to gain this education. However, it's not the only source of it. 👍🏼 And you never graduate from your intellectual journey.Any thoughts? "القراءة للعقل، كالتمرين الرياضي للجسد."
They see the same thing, yet process it in completely different ways.It all boils down to our beliefs and attitudes towards others. One can be an optimist, and the other can be a pessimist. One can be ambitious or simply condescending. We can see ourselves as part of this world. As contributing to it's progression. Or we can view our lives as an attempt to simply rise up above others for the sake of it. You control your beliefs, and those beliefs are informed by your thoughts. Be them thoughts produced out of emotion or ignorance. Or thoughts diligently produced after contemplation and education. You need to make sure that you think in a matter that is conducive to your calling, not counterproductive to it.
