| KAAMATAN > HARVEST FESTIVAL 🌾Kaamatan is a special harvest festival celebrated mainly by the Kadazandusun and other indigenous communities (KDMR) in Sabah, Malaysia usually at the end of May, especially on the 30th and 31st. It’s basically their way of showing gratitude for a good rice harvest and honoring a rice spirit called Bambarayon, which is super important in their traditional beliefs.During this time, there’s a lot going on traditional dances like the Sumazau, cultural performances, local food and big events like the Unduk Ngadau the beauty pageant, which celebrates the strength and grace of Kadazandusun women. For people like me who are Muslim, we don’t take part in the spiritual or ritual aspects of Kaamatan since it doesn’t align with Islamic teachings, but we can still join in the cultural side of it like the food stalls, music and just enjoying the community vibe, as long as it stays respectful.I think what’s beautiful about Kaamatan is how it brings people together regardless of race or religion. It’s not just a festival, it’s a reminder to appreciate nature, our roots and each other. As long as we know our boundaries and respect one another’s beliefs, we can still celebrate unity in diversity. Kaamatan really shows how rich Sabah’s culture is and even if we come from different backgrounds, there’s always something we can learn and appreciate from each other.I’m proud to be part of the Kadazandusun people who continue to strengthen our bonds with one another, even though we have different religious beliefs.Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan 🌾Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan 🫶🏻
